On June 30, 2008 the U.S. Department of Justices released its Prison Statistics. A summary of their findings showed that by yearend 2007 there were 2,310,984 prisoners held in federal or state prisons or in local jails. In 2007 the total number of men in federal prison reached 1,494,805, growing at a rate of 0.7%. The total number of women grew at the alarming rate of 1.2% reaching 115,779.
Oregon Department of Corrections found that of inmates releasing to Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas Counties in 2008, 60% of those individuals are parents. As the prison populations increase across the nation, Oregon is one of the few states tracking how many incarcerated individuals are parents. To reduce recidivism and intergenerational criminality, Pathfinders of Oregon is working hard to deliver comprehensive programming in Oregon.
